Volunteering
"So often you hear comments about 'those people' - the faceless,
unfortunate poor. But when you get to know these women and hear
their stories, you say, 'There but for the grace of God go I.' It
gives you an entirely different view. I feel my life is so enriched
by knowing them."-- volunteer Helen Cosgriff of Longmeadow
Rosalie, a client/worker at Weston, confesses that she was "shocked" by the kindness of volunteers. On the streets - where she was a drinker, a drug abuser, and occasionally a prostitute - the message was that "everyone's out for themselves." Weston taught her otherwise.
"It probably changes their perspective on us 'rich' people," laughs volunteer Maureen Pooler of Springfield, a retired schoolteacher.
